China investigates illegal VoIP providers Posted: 04 Jan 2011 12:49 AM PST (MENAFN) Chinese ministry of information and industry technology said that the government is investigating Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers in an attempt to stop what it calls illegal internet telephone services, reported The National. The ministry said that the only companies permitted to provide VoIP are the state-owned telecom operators including China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom. Other companies are being investigated as the ministry plans to press charges against them. The ban would cause the majority of VoIP users to switch to government-owned call providers and thus would increase China's revenue from calls. It is worth noting that even if the government applies restrictions, illegal VoIP calls would still be possible, even if more difficult to conduct.
