VoIP Services Hasten Telecom Takeover, Developing New Revenue Channels

With Skype's launch of a display ad network, it's clear the telecom industry is facing an ongoing shift in revenue generation, lending itself to the new era of social networking and beyond.  But Skype's not the only one making strides in chat and video services.  Today Impulse Point and Dell announced their partnership for serving Northern Arizona University, replacing the university's installation of Cisco Clean Access NAC (Network Access Control) with Impulse's NAC. With this modification, students living in the university's residential housing, using brand-new operating systems and anti-virus software will not face exemption anymore as it happened until now.

In addition to this, the university will benefit from enhanced security, reduced help desk support calls and greatly reduced NAC administration requirements for its IT staff. Until now the solution ran on 21 separate servers, meaning a high degree of vulnerability that has been dealt with Dell's three PowerEdge servers.

Although Cisco did not rise to expectations concerning the Northern Arizona University initiative, it is now announcing a B2C opportunity by connecting Cisco ūmi and the Cisco TelePresence portfolio. Adding to this, Cisco will also develop its ūmi product line with new features, such as HD desktop video and high-quality immersive telepresence experiences on an HDTV.

"With today's announcement, Cisco is continuing to deliver innovative, market-leading video and telepresence solutions that enable consumers to connect and transact with businesses from the comfort of their home," said Marthin De Beer, senior vice president, TelePresence, Emerging Technologies & Consumer Business, Cisco. "By offering a range of video solutions — from high-end Cisco TelePresence for business to the free Cisco ūmi Connect product, we are extending our leadership in telepresence and driving the pervasive use of HD video."

Video-conferencing has gained attention in the last period if we consider Skype's own video chat service that's increased significantly in the past several months, and this is a major area of growth and opportunity for the entire industry. Just take a look at the new iPad 2's Facetime feature, that has been adapted for the Android OS. Facebook is starting to seize opportunity by popping display ads and so does Skype.

With the partnership between Skype and Meebo announced earlier today, the new Skype advertising experience will feature a high-impact display ad within the "Home" tab in Skype for Windows (version 5.1 or later) through a rich, interactive ad unit.  Skype made a pretty good choice by signing a deal with Meebo, as the latter is getting better and better at chat advertising, having previously acquired Mindset Media.
